Remaining crew: Lt Joachim Kretschmer, Observer (MIA), Uffz Bernhard Hochstuhl, wireless operator (POW) and Iffz Hugo Sauer, mechanic (KIA). Kretschmer and Sauer were killed early in the attack and Hochstuhl was wounded in the leg and barely escaped death when bullets scarred his flight helmet. Hochstuhl and Lange were picked up by ASR 43 hours after ditching, Lange suffering from exposure. Sauers body washed ashore near Whitby on 30 October, 1939 and he lies in the German Military Cemetery at Cannock Chase, Blk 3, Row 12, Gr364. Although Lange is said to be an Ofw, he appears to be wearing a Navy uniform in a picture of he and Hochstuhl in captivity. The photo may be applied to the wrong crew or the identifications on the photo (pg 22 Broken Eagles I) are reversed. Lange and Hochstuhl were the first German fliers captured on British soil during WWII. | Cannock Chase | ||||
