As captain of aircraft and wireless operator respectively, Flight Lieutenant Humphreys and Sergeant Wheeler participated in an attack on Lubeck on the night of 28th March, 1942 On the return journey, whilst over the Kiel Canal, the aircraft was subjected to a series of attacks by an enemy fighter The rear gunner was wounded, the mid-upper and rear turrets were put out of action, and other damage was sustained by the aircraft During the action, Flight Lieutenant Humphrey's aircraft was forced down to some 200 feet but, largely due to the excellent collaboration between himself and Sergeant Wheeler, he finally succeeded in evading his attacker and flew his damaged aircraft back to base where he made a safe landing. Throughout the combat, this officer displayed high skill and courage and was greatly assisted by Sergeant Wheeler who steadfastly remained at his post, giving clear directions of the enemy's tactics Both Flight Lieutenant Humphreys and Sergeant Wheeler have carried out many sorties over enemy territory’.
