| 28 | Allen | Basil Derrik | Sergeant | 1021545 | 1920 | Air Gunner | RAFVR | Bomber Command | 149Sqn (East India)![]() | 1942-11-16 | Stirling | I | W7566 | OJ-C | Lakenheath | 1721 | Gardening | On the night of 16/17 November Oberleutnant Reinhald Knacke and his bordfunker, Unteroffizier Heu of 1./NJG1 destroyed a Short Stirling when 65 aircraft were engaged in ‘Gardening’ operations from Lorient to the Friesian Islands, Short Stirling I W7566 OJ-C on 149 Squadron flown by Sergeant Thomas Anderson West and two Wellingtons tailed to return from the night’s operations. The Stirling had taken oft from Lakenheath at 1721 hours. Leu picked it up on his Li set at 16,350 feet at 4,000 yards distant. Knacke peered out in the direction of the plot but could not see him for the vision of the human eye in the dark is not more than 100 to 200 yards. His nerves were at breaking point but West was still flying calmly towards the defence zone and would only be at action stations once the first searchlight was turned on. West was taking no avoiding action. Knacke gave full throttle and rapidly closed the distance. Suddenly Heu reported anew contact at 2,000 yards distance as another Viermot crossed their field slowly, from north to south. For a moment Knacke was undecided which opponent to pursue and then he decided on the nearest Viermot. The enemy machine had begun to weave and was now travelling on the Li set alternately from port to starboard and back. Heu gave Knacke the final Li readings but three pairs of eves scanned the sky in vain for his shadow. Knacke finally shot the Stirling down into the sea off Vielle-Sce-Gironde. In his excitement Knacke fired immediately into the full petrol tanks. Flight Sergeant Cecil Robert McMullin RCAF the rear gunner lost his head, abandoned his machine guns and bailed out, landing right in the propeller of Knacke’s 110, There was a dull thud, which made the Messerschmitt shudder. The engine began to vibrate so badly that Knacke had to shut it down. He landed his clumsy 110 at Venlo on one engine. Mechanics rushed over and lit up the machine. By the light of their torches they could still see traces of blood and hair on the propeller. Strips of uniform were hanging on the antennae of the Li. The fate of the Canadian gunner upset everyone. McMullin was buried at Hourtin Communal Cemetery while the body of Sergeant Herbert Carter, the only other bady that was recovered from the sea was laid to rest at Vielle-Ste-Gironde Communal Cemetery. All the other members of the crew have no known grave and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
