"Conversion from the original data held as images of old teletype sheets must have taken Major Paradie years.
The Paradie database is as close to a treasure as the World will see.” François Dutil

DUPLICATES EXIST IN THIS DATABASE
We have integrated entries from several databases in the Paradie Archive and as a result there may be more than one entry for a given individual. To ensure you read all the data we have on a person, use the Service Number (without the prefix J/ P/ R/ etc.) to perform a further search for more information on that person.
DATA ALIGNMENT IN PROCESS OF BEING ADJUSTED
Owing to problems with encoding methods, some records require manual adjustment to bring data elements within the record into alignment. This is a lengthy and ongoing process. If the record you are looking at is hard to read, it means we have yet to make the appropriate manual adjustments, so send us a message via the Helpdesk and we will correct that record.
SEARCHING ON SERIAL NUMBERS
Most records were originally encoded with aircraft serial numbers in the format AB 123. The standard is to use the format AB123. We have a long term project underway to change all serial numbers to the standard form, but with 50,000+ records this is a long process.
If you would like our team to research a family member or friend who appears in this database, contact us via the Helpdesk. We will send you instructions.

3-character searches are now supported.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Wellington lll X3699 OW-QAttack on Kiel from RAF Dishforth Take-off 20:30. Hit by Flak just before the target, the rear turret was damaged. Turned for home but found that a light was on that could not be turned off, attracting a JU-88 which attacked the Wellington. The hydraulics were damaged and the bomb doors opened. About five minutes from the Norfolk coast, both engines quit and they ditched hard into the North Sea and broke up. P/O D Laskey RCAF, the wireless operator and Segeant L Anderson (RCAF), the bomb aimer, were able to get to the dinghy but were not able to turn it over. They tried to paddle it over to where PO K Walley, the navigator and Sergeant Beaton RCAF, the rear gunner, were calling. After about four and a half hours, a destroyer was able to pick them up. Sadly the pilot, navigator and rear gunner perished. Pilot Officer KM Walley (RCAF) was missing, presumed killed in action. The conclusion of the Accident Investigation Board: 'When demonstrating low flying, instructors are to do so in the approved low flying area for their particular unit and are to clear all obstacles by a minimum height of 50 feet'. On February 5, 1944 three students of Pilot Officer Henning wrote to his parents. 'As former students of Mr. Hennings we wish to let you know of our great admiration for him as our instructor and friend. Mr. Henning possessed an instructing quality and good will manner that promoted a feeling of friendship between himself and his pupils. Onboard were were 10 crew and a journalist Fred NanCarrow from the Glasgow Herald, some say he was investigating the death of the Duke of Kent in a sister Sunderland a week previously at Eagle's Rock. After several hours at sea the giant flying boat turned around for home, but it became apparent that there was insufficient fuel to make it back to Oban. Flying Officer F J Fife of the RCAF decided to put down in the water, on the face of it not a major problem for a flying boat, and take on more fuel. At 8.40pm the Sunderland set down in Vane Bay but hit a rock which ripped the bottom out of the aircraft causing it to start sinking.

An SOS signal resulted in the Tobermory lifeboat setting out to assist the airmen. At the last known position of the Sunderland, all that was found was clothing floating on the surface. An RAF Hudson spotted a dinghy with one man in it off the north coast of Coll. The lifeboat arived but the only people still alive were Flying Officer M E Russell, the co-pilot and Flight Sgt R B H Scroggs. Fife, William Henderson and William Currie were recovered from the water having drowned, the bodies of Charles Castle (Gunner), Victor Ames (Flt Sgt), Kenneth Page (Gunner), Edward Cowan (Radio operator) were recovered later on having died of exposure.

Attack on Kiel from RAF Dishforth Take-off 20:30.

X3699:
Flying Officer DL Kennedy (RCAF) was killed in action
Flying Officer KM Walley (RCAF) and FS CN Beaton (RCAF) were missing, presumed killed in action
Flying Officer Kennedy's body was recovered and is buried in Norfolk, England
Flying Officer Walley and FS Beaton have no known grave and are commemorated on the Runnymede War Memorial

4 Apr 1943 - Flak & fighter damage, ditched in North Sea
Attack on Kiel from RAF Dishforth Take-off 20:30.

Anderson, stationed in Montreal since he entered the RCAF Ferry Command in September, 1941, had made five trips to England, one to South America, and several to Atlantic outposts as a pilot. He started flying in 1930 when he was 16, taking flight training at the East Boston airport. He returned to Perham, to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orin Anderson, and farmed until 1938, when he bought a light plan and was granted his commercial pilot's license. Shortly afterwards he established a flying service at Madawaska Lake and Portage Lake and conducted extensive beaver trapping operations by air over the wilderness in the western part of the state. He was widely known 'Maine flying trapper and wilderness pilot'. First of the Main flying trappers, Anderson received national recognition following an article in the Saturday Evening Post concerning his several hundred-mile-long trapping in the wilderness of Portage Lake. In 1941 he took special instrument flight training in Boston, before transferring to the RCAF ferry flight training course at Montreal.
