The B-17 was either "Little Butch II, # 42-31744, 390BG/568BS piloted by 1/Lt Walter Wiegand, or "Preferred Risk" #42-102673, 390BG/571BS piloted by 1/Lt Joseph W. Lewis. During the ramming, his canopy was torn off and he bailed with P-51s in hot pursuit. He opened his chute late, landing near a farmer. 200 meters from him, landed Uffz "Pimpf" Erhard with a knee wound. On this same day, Kuring lost two other friends, Ofhr Hans Damran died in his chute from a stomach wound. Ofhr Lüdecke thought to have died in an explosion when he rammed a B-17. Then drafted into the Signal Coprs before entering Luft training. Flew his first combat mission in 1944. During the Battle of the Bulge, 24 December, 1944, he made a force landing in another A-8 on the Autobahn south of Bonn. Forced to bail from his A-8 in August, 1944 when he lost oil pressure and his engine failed, suffering internal injuries. He was hospitalized for several months, during which time, his parents received his death notice! He was wingman for Wilhelm Moritz and Oskar Romm. Witnessed Oskar Romms fiery crash on 24 April, 1945. He also flew a few missions as wingman for Gunther Schack, Kdr of IV/JG-3 at the time, and Werner Schröer, also Kdr IV/JG-3 in February, 1945. His "Swartz Mann" (Mechanic), Ofw Hans Langenkamp. Ended the war by riding to Westerland in northern Germany, avoiding POW Camp. A Mechanical Engineer in Germany, he emigrated to America in 1954, retiring in 1986. A comrade of Emil Daniel, now living in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Changed the spelling to the "Americanized" Puett in the U.S.. One known victory, a B-24 over Austria on 22 August, 1944. His 2nd, a P-39 on 16 March, 1945. His 3rd, a Boston on 18 April, 1945. The ac exploded on impact resulting from a parachute mine still onboard, killing the entire crew. Civilians were also killed and this incident may well have been the first civilian deaths in England due to enemy action. Winkler remained interned until 27 January, 1946, when he was permitted to return to West Germany. 26 of the 37 were turned over to the Russians as POWs, only 14 were returned from the East. The AC crashed at Wingland Marsh, near Kings Lynn, Norfolk, before the crew had time to bail. In an earlier incident, in the same ac, on 20 April, 1944, during an operation over the North Sea, they were attacked by a night fighter. They escaped the attacker by evasive action, however, the gunner, Gefr Hans Schiebeck bailed, and the others returned home without him. Several Danish craft offered assistance, but was refused. Many hours later, their dinghy drifted ashore at Lilleballe, on the eastside of the Island Samso. His only known R/O/Gunner, Uffz Adam was killed by the French Resistance when they were both captured after crashing at Fougeres France. The French turned Autenrieth over to the Americans. American POW, released in 1946. Autenrieth died 8 June, 1996. Added: Autenrieth joined the Bundeswehr in 1956 and retired as an Oberstleutnant. His 04/08/44 remaining crew: Fw Rudolf Adam (born 21/07/1919 in Schwemlingen), R/O (MIA) and Uffz Georg Helbig (born 29/06/1920 in Steinfeld), Mech (POW) (absa3945). Added: Another source suggests Fw Adam and Uffz Helbig bailed out the night of 20/21 January, 1944, and returned uninjured; Autenrieth bailed, hitting the tailfin and breaking his leg.
