V1.01 Data derived from many sources. Perfection is our goal: Corrections and Additions are encouraged and requested. Please Email us

35,000+ Entries in Database (as of October 2025): largest in the world
The only authorised publication of the Kracker Luftwaffe Archive: anything else has been stolen and infringes my copyright.

Please email us any photos you have. We will acknowledge you in the database unless requested otherwise.
This is a non-political research resource. The authors of this material do not condone hatred in any form,
neither do they support oppressive and despotic regimes or political systems. See our Statement

In some cases you can see a pilot's extended record of victories in date order from our Luftwaffe Victories database

There is a rogue group of copyright infringers who have stolen a much earlier version of my data - from at least 10 years ago - and have the affrontery to publish that, along with using my name, on their poorly researched website. They claim this is the 'original' Kracker Archive, a ridiculous claim since my Archive has been in a state of continuous development for over 30 years and nobody - NOBODY - has the original. They have no right to use my name or my data and readers who come across this nonsense should do nothing to encourage theft of this nature. I am outraged by this blatant theft and misrepresentation of my lifetime's work. The ONLY person I have ever authorized to publish my data and use my name is Kelvin Youngs, who earned my trust and respect many years ago and is authorized by me to publish my work on whichever website he organizes, currently this being its present home at the highly respected Aircrew Remembered.
3-character Searches are now supported

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.

MAJOR SEARCH AND SORT ENHANCEMENTS: You can now search on Unit such as 3/SG-1, 5./JG 51. Note that some sources used to develop this Archive date back 3 decades and may not have been consistent: you should try various options. For example 5./JG 51 may have been encoded as 5/JG 51 or 5./JG-51. You can also search on aircraft types such as Me 109, P-47.

Fighter Operational Clasp
His 1st victory, a Russian DB-3 on 19 December, 1939. He was Finlands Leading Ace.

Karhunen (L) Juutilainen (R) Römpötti Finland 1942
(Added by Pietrzak Youngs)
Eino Ilmari "Illu" Juutilainen (21 February 1914 – 21 February 1999) was a fighter pilot of the Ilmavoimat (Finnish Air Force), and the top scoring non-German fighter pilot of all time. This makes him the top flying ace of the Finnish Air Force, leading all Finnish pilots in score against Soviet aircraft in World War II (1939–40 and 1941–44), with 94 confirmed aerial combat victories in 437 sorties. He himself claimed 126 victories. He achieved 34 of his victories while flying the Brewster Buffalo fighter. He was one of only four people to twice receive the highest Finnish military decoration, the Mannerheim Cross, and is considered the highest scoring non-German ace of all time. Juutilainen finished the war without a single hit to his plane from enemy fighter airplanes. He also scored the first radar-assisted victory in the Finnish Air Force on 24 March 1943, when he was guided to a Soviet Pe-2 by a German radar operator, who was testing out the freshly-delivered radar sets, that officially became operational 3 days later.

During the Winter War (which broke on 30 November 1939) Juutilainen flew the Fokker D.XXI. He scored his first victory on 19 December 1939, shooting down an Ilyushin DB-3 bomber and damaging two more. At the end of the Winter War, Juutilainen had achieved one shared and two individual victories. During the Continuation War, Juutilainen served in 3/LeLv 24, flying a Brewster B-239 Buffalo. On 21 July 1941, Juutilainen and five other Buffaloes scrambled to intercept Soviet fighters from 65th ShAP that were strafing Finnish troops near Käkisalmi. During that sortie, he destroyed a Polikarpov I-153 'Chaika', making him an "ace" in the Brewster Buffalo.

Courtesy Christian König

A few days later, on 1 August, seven fighters under the command of First Lieutenant Karhunen destroyed six I-16s near Rautjarvi, and Juutilainen (having been promoted to Warrant Officer in the meantime) claimed two of them. On the morning of 6 February 1942, while reconnoitering the Petrovkiy-Jam region with other LLv 24 pilots, Juutilainen intercepted seven Tupolev SB bombers escorted by 12 MiG-3s. Juutilainen claimed two SBs. Juutilainen later recalled: "I noticed the bombers at 3,000 metres, and radioed the boys about them. As we intercepted the Soviet aircraft, I spotted a formation of three SBs heading for a nearby railway line and dived after them. Targeting the aircraft to the left of the formation, my fire set its port wing aflame. The SB crashed next to the railway line. Just as I started after the lead bomber, I observed a MiG fighter closing in on me. In spite of the threat posed by the latter, I managed to hit the bomber in the starboard engine, which poured out smoke and oil. Moments later the aeroplane rolled over to the right and plunged into the forest close to the railway line. Turning my attention to the MiG, which was above me, I managed to shoot at it as we raced towards each other. My aim was good and the fighter started to trail black smoke from the engine. He banked away to the east, losing altitude as it went."

On 27–28 March 1942, 3/LLv 24 moved to Immola in preparation for a Finnish Army offensive on Suursaari, in the Gulf of Finland. Although grossly outnumbered over the Gulf of Finland, LeLv 24 pilots were more experienced than their Soviet opponents from Red Banner Baltic Fleet. Even when they had the advantage of surprise and height, Soviet pilots did not succeed in shooting down Finnish pilots. On 28 March, WO Juutilainen, in patrol with Sgt Huotari, attacked some "Chaikas" of 11 IAP over the Suurkyla shoreline, at Gogland, and shot down two of them. These air victories took Juutilainen's tally to 22. A month later, on 26 April, he became his unit's first recipient of the Mannerheim Cross. On 20 September, he took off with Capt Jorma Karhunen and 3/LeLv 24 pilots for a patrol of the Kronstadt-Tolbukhin (ru)-Seiskari region. Near the Estonian coast, they were bounced by ten Soviet fighters. But the Finnish quickly reacted and managed to down three of their opponents. WO Juutilainen was credited with two kills. All in all, Juutilainen scored 34 victories in Brewster B-239, 28 of them (including three triple kills) between 9 July 1941 and 22 November 1942, in his BW-364 "Orange 4". In 1943, Juutilainen was transferred to LeLv 34, which used new Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2s.With the Bf 109, he shot down a further 58 enemy planes. He shot down six Soviet airplanes on 30 June 1944 (all confirmed on Soviet loss records), becoming an ace in a day and parallelling Jorma Sarvanto's score on 6 January 1940 in the Winter War.

Juutilainen refused an officer commission, fearing it would keep him from flying. His 94th and last victory was a Li-2, the Russian version of the Douglas C-47, shot down on 3 September 1944 over the Karelian Isthmus. After the wars, Juutilainen served in the air force until 1947. He worked as a professional pilot until 1956, flying people in his De Havilland Moth. His last flight was in 1997 at age 83, in a double-seated F-18 Hornet of the Finnish Air Force. Juutilainen died at home in Tuusula (Tusby) on his 85th birthday on 21 February 1999. (Source: Wikipedia)

Most of these victories were achieved under extremely trying conditions. His most successful day was on the 24.07.1942. On this day he flew 3 sorties as a Rottenführer and shot down 6 enemy aircraft during engagements with numerically superior hostile formations. Feldwebel Münster has shown excellent leadership qualities as a Schwarm leader. He flies with calm and skill. During all attacks he demonstrates courage and resilience, and he has also shown himself to be an excellent trainer of the young pilots that have been entrusted to him. His accomplished successes and proven bravery on the battlefield render Feldwebel Münster as a worthy candidate for the award of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.” (CKönig).

MIA since 19 April, 1943 when he had to make a forced landing in Wk# 14810 on frozen Lake Bolschoje, near Murmansk, after aerial combat with Soviet fighters (Hurricanes) of 2/GSAP/VVS. Another source identified the G-2 as Wk # 14810. His victor is thought to have been Soviet Ace, Lt Nikolai Bokii. He was picked up by a Soviet patrol a few days later. Never repatriated, he was seen in a Murmansk prison in 1947, and has been missing ever since. He seems to have died in Soviet captivity, but one source claims he lived until the 1990s, after a long career as a flight instructor in the USSR. New Soviet publicatios say he was shot in a POW Camp on 21 October, 1943, identified as Lager (Camp) Temnikov by P. Bastin. Presumably, all his victories were in the East. His first known victory, a Soviet I-16 on 12 September, 1941, on his third mission. On 26 April, 1942, he downed five Pe 3s of 95 IAP. By the end of 1942, his victory count was around 80. His 94th, and last victory, JG-5s 500th victory was claimed on 13 March, 1943. Injured in a non-operational crash in Wk#13919 on 3/8/43 south of Alakurtti due to engine trouble. Alternate spelling: Mueller.

(Added by Pietrzak Youngs)

Muller on the day he was awarded the Ritterkreuz on the Murmansk front in June 1942. By tradition the new holder on that day was saluted by all ranks and himself saluted no-one.

Müller returning from successful mission

On February 21, 1943, two P-40 fighters and five Hurricanes (British single-seater fighter aircraft) took off from the Soviet Military air base in Chupa on a World War II mission to halt an attack by the German Luftwaffe. One of the Hurricanes was piloted by 22-year-old Boris Alexandrovich Lazarev from the 760th IPA. During the mission, he encountered German pilot Oberfeldwebel Rudolf Muller of 6 Jagdgeschwader, 5the fighter squadron Luftwaffe (German Air Force) 'Expertenstaffel' and his squad of four Bf 109G fighters. Lazarev was shot down by Muller near a railway station in Polyarnyi-Krug. Lazarev's mummified remains were recovered from a swamp in January 1998.

at least Fighter Operational Clasp in Bronze
He defected to the Soviets at Novomalo on 11 September, 1943, along with Gefr V. Tkacik, another Slovak pilot. Alternate spelling: Gerik, Geric. Added: From 04-06/1943, he underwent retraining and training for Bf 109 E. From 23/06/43, he was deployed on the Eastern Front. After training for Bf 109 G at Sarabuz airfield in Crimea, he operated from Anapa airfield. Officially, he achieved 9 confirmed kills of Soviet aircraft on the Eastern Front (2x Ilyushin Il-2, 1x LaGG-3, 4x A-20 Boston, 1x Supermarine Spitfire, 1x Bell P-39 Airacobra). The credibility and number of his kills is still the subject of debate among aviation historians. (CK) On September 11, 1943, he took off from the Anapa airfield. Gerič flew together with Martiš for the escort flight of the Fw 189 recce machine. E of Novorossiysk, they got into a duel with a group of Soviet Spitfire fighters. Geric broke away from the duel with the overloaded machine and landed at the Timashevskaya airfield, where he surrendered to the Soviets. Š. Martiš returned to Anapa alone. The Fw-189 returned to its base badly damaged, flying on only 1 engine. The injured pilot managed to land, but subsequently succumbed to his injuries, as did the other two crew members. In the Soviet Union, Gerič underwent intelligence training and shortly afterwards was dropped over central Slovakia in 07/1944. However, he was detained by the Germans and then imprisoned in Bratislava. He was later released and, at the request of the Minister of National Defence, General Čatloš, was to establish contact with the advancing Red Army. In 08/1944, he and Lieutenant Šingliar flew in a Praga E-39 aircraft to Tri Duby Airport. However, the plane crashed near the village of Ladce. Both crew members probably died. (CK)
