He briefly commanded the JG-1 Test Unit, experimenting with mortar-carrying Fw 190s. Their weight made them easy prey for Allied fighters, and the program was abolished. Before taking command of II/ZG-26, he was Kdr Erprobungskommando (Test Unit) 25. He was the highest scoring destroyer pilot.
