By the time he was sent away for officer training in the spring of 1943 he had destroyed: 200 trucks, approx 70 locomotives, 16 tanks, 4 ammunition trains, 1 armoured train, 8 bridges, 2 ammunition dumps, 25 aircraft (on the ground), 7 Soviet fighters in the air (4 J-17s, 2 J-18s and 1 MiG-3), 3 Soviet TB-3 four-engined bombers during a night sortie over Stalingrad, 2 tankers, 2 steamers and 1 gunboat with a total tonnage of 18000 GRT. After transferring to the western front he went on to achieve 5 night victories as a single-engined night fighter, 2 B-17 bombers by day and 5 further night victories with conventional night-fighter units.
