He was buried in the Hiddesen Cemetery near Detmold. His Wk# 301458 was sd 30 March, 1944 by flak 17km SW of Brody; crew (unnamed) retd safely. 156 combat missions. Alternate spelling Schaefer. Added: He received the Knights Cross already in the hospital where he died 1 day later. On the 06/04/44 he took-off in bad weather in the area of Brody when his Ju-88 was hit by infantry fire. One shot hit his pistol, igniting the ammunition there. He was injured in the kidney and belly. He managed to climb and ordered his crew to bail out but they disobeyed - not wanting to be Soviet POWS. So Schäfer flew back 35min in severe pain and landed smoothly, rescueing his crew. On the 08/04/44 Generalleutnant Seidemann awarded the knights cross to him in the hospital with his crew attending.He made 110 combat flights until 30/11/43 - within 3 months! In 03/44 he destroyed a train an ammunition in severerly bad weather and shot down a Sovjet courier plane at the same day. On 28/03/44 he alone destroyed a brigde across the Dnjestr and delaying the Russian advance considerately. He managed to shoot down 2 more Sovjet aircraft with full bombload and destroyed during nine attack runs diverse Sovjet a/c on the ground. WIA during an emergency landing due to Flak 17km SW of Brody behind enemy lines on 30/03/44 but managed to get back with his crew to the own lines. Pilot badge received on 26/01/42. (CK) | ||
