He was injured the night of 4/5 May, 1943 when he crashed his Do 217 north of Amsterdam due to engine failure. Added: Killed were Obstlt Walter Bradel, Obs (see his entry in the Archive, bur Yssel CX-4-85) and Flg W.Becker, Gnr (bur Yssel CX-4-84). WIA were Uffz A.Drechler, R/O and Ogefr W.Schlagbaum, Mech/Gnr (SGLO). He was retrained as a Night Fighter in 1944, and it is not known if he scored any confirmed victories. Bowers/Lednicer suggests 29 victories.
