NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary

Owing to a restriction placed by our hosting service, searches cannot be made on less than 4 characters. Searching on 3 or less will produce no results even though the name IS in our database. If you seek info on a name with less than 4 characters, EMAIL with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
We are working on techniques to mitigate this restriction.

1944-01-13LancasterIIIED826LS-Mildenhall1115TrainingThe a/c took off to carry out a loaded climb & cross country flight to St Eval and return. At 1440 hrs a W/T message was received from the a/c asking if there were any special instructions. No instructions were passed to it and nothing further was heard from the a/c. At 1450 hrs the same day some naval vessels in the wash reported that a four engined a/c had fallen into the sea. Although from maps recovered it appears this a/c was from RAF Mildenhall, nothing yet has been found to identify it definitely. 1942-05-15HudsonVAM626RR:KBircham Newton20:39Strike MissionLed the second formation of a strike force from 320 Sqn (9 aircraft) and 407 Sqn (12 aircraft) which was sortied to attack an east-bound convoy of German ships off the Dutch Frisian Islands. The a/c was hit in the cockpit, wings and tail damaging the Instruments and hydraulics. Force-landed at Docking.UninjuredDSO Gazetted 19th June 1943. Citation reads: In May, 1942, Flight Lieutenant Christie and Pilot Officer Kay each led a force of bombers in an attack on a large enemy convoy, including armed ships and destroyers off the Dutch coast. The attack, which was delivered in the fading light, was pressed . home in the face of a barrage of the utmost intensity. Pilot Officer Kay, who was first to attack, received wounds on the fingers when shrapnel tore through the floor in front of him. Despite this, he flew in, firing his guns, and bombs were released on a ship almost at deck level. Flight Lieutenant Christie followed in and, releasing his bombs from mast height, scored hits on a medium sized ship. Both aircraft were damaged. That of Flight Lieutenant Christie was hit in the wings, fuselage and tail, causing damage which made the aircraft exceedingly difficult to control. Pilot Officer Kay's aircraft was hit in both engines while he himself received a further wound in the arm. Despite their difficulties, both these officers flew their damaged aircraft back to . this country. Some time previously, Flight Lieutenant Christie participated in a daring attack on a convoy off the Dutch coast. In the face of heavy defensive fire, a large ship was bombed from only 20 feet. As the bombs exploded large quantities of debris were hurled in the air and the vessel was set on fire.
