Data derived from many sources. Corrections/Additions welcomed via Helpdesk

NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary

Owing to a restriction placed by our hosting service, searches cannot be made on less than 4 characters. Searching on 3 or less will produce no results even though the name IS in our database. If you seek info on a name with less than 4 characters, EMAIL with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
We are working on techniques to mitigate this restriction.

SafeAwarded the DFC whilst a Fg Off. and serving in India. London Gazette 25th October 1950

Awarded the Bar to his DFC whilst with 427 Sqn. London Gazette 13th April 1943. Citation: Wing Commander Dudley Henderson BURNSIDE, D.F.C. (37464), No. 427 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron. Distinguished Flying Cross. Pilot Officer Reginald James HAYHURST (128419), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 427 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron. One night in March, 1943, Wing Commander Burnside and Pilot Officer Hayhurst were captain and bomb aimer of an aircraft detailed to attack Essen. When nearing the target area, the bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire. One of the crew was killed and another severely wounded, while the aircraft sustained damage. The aileron control was affected and the windscreen de-icing glycol tank burst drenching Pilot Officer Hayhurst and filling the forward part of the bomber with suffocating fumes. Despite this, Pilot Officer Hayhurst directed his captain to the target which was successfully bombed and a good photograph obtained. The aircraft was held by searchlights for a few minutes but Wing Commander Burnside skilfully evaded the defences and set course for home. On the return flight the aircraft encountered enemy fighters but, each time, he shook them off. Displaying fine airmanship he flew the damaged aircraft back to an airfield in this country. In a very trying situation both these members of aircraft crew displayed courage and determination of a high order.

Later in his service he was Mentioned in Despatches (MiD). London Gazette 1st January 1945.

Investigating officers from the RCAF visited the village of Steinberg 40 miles NW of Berlin. They were told by the villagers that a large British aircraft had crashed four to five hundred yards west of the villa and that the crew had been buried in a communal grave in the local cemetery. It was believed that the aircraft had been shot by night fighters. The grave was exhumed but unhappily Sgt. Taylor the Flight Engineer and the Bomb Aimer Fg.Off. Daynes of the crew were the only ones who could be individually identified. (Extract from letter to Mrs Presland by Wg.Cdr. Gunn RCAF Causalities Officer dated 23 March 1950)

Archiwum Polish DatabaseLiberator EW148 1944-04-25. Being ferried by 45 (AT) Group via RCAF Gander to India when it crashed six minutes after takeoff from RCAF Dorval at 09:30. On initial climb, lost altitude over central Montreal. Just cleared Mount Royal, and narrowly missed the Sun Life Building, the Bonaventure Railway Station and a school before slamming into tenements on Shannon and Ottawa Streets in the community of Griffintown in Montreal, Québec. 5 crew and 10 civilians on the ground were killed in the ensuing explosion and fire. Pilot may have been trying to reach the St. Lawrence River to ditch the aircraft. The cause thought to be the structural failure of the tailplane. Weather may have had a bearing on the accident.
