Airspeed was lost; the Halifax stalled and dived into the ground at Spring Hill, Rainton, 5 miles North of RAF Dishforth, North Yorkshire | Killed | United Kingdom, Dipton (St. Patrick'S) Roman Catholic Cemetery, Sec. C. Grave V.18. Epitaph: "FEAR NOT FOR I AM WITH THEE: TURN NOT ASIDE, FOR I AM THY GOD" REST IN PEACE. Son Of John Joseph And Elizabeth Gallagher. | ![]() ![]() | Crew were instucted to shut down one engine and fly an approach, but then to remain in the air to simulate a practice overshoot. This they did, butt unfortunately they shut down the starboard inner, which provides hydraulic power to raise the undercarriage and flaps. They were not told to not shutdow the starboard inner. Consequently in the oershoot they were unable to raise the undercarriage or flaps and the subsequent drag caused speed to drop until the plane stalled. The aircraft clipped trees in an orchard before flying into trees and telephone wires alongside the Thirsk to Ripon road then crashing into a large field at the south side of the road. The aircraft broke up and three of the four crew were killed. The pilot remarkably survived though spent many months in hospital. | |||||||||
