NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Distinguished Flying Cross. Flying Officer Forrest Martin FISHER (121787), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 105 Squadron. Distinguished Flying Medal. 1379594 Flight Sergeant Leslie HOGAN, No. 105 Squadron. On the 27th May, 1943. a force of bombers were detailed to attack targets at Jena, Germany, in daylight. The operation called for a high degree of skill and necessitated a flight over strongly defended areas and difficult terrain. Whilst still a considerable distance from the target, the weather deteriorated and visibility became very poor. Nevertheless, the objective, far away in enemy territory was reached according to plan. In spite of balloon defences, and in the face of fierce antiaircraft fire, a low level attack was pressed home with great vigour. The success achieved reflects the greatest credit on the efforts of the abovenamed personnel who took part in the operation in various capacities, as members of aircraft crews. Their skill, courage and determination were of a high order."

DFC awarded whilst with 105 Sqn, gazetted 6th April 1943. Citation reads: "Acting Flight Lieutenant William Walter BLESSING (Aus.404648), Royal Australian Air Force, No. 105 Squadron. In March, 1943, this officer flew the leading aircraft of a bomber force detailed to undertake a low level attack on the railway workshops at Paderborn. The operation, involving a deep penetration into Germany in daylight, demanded a high degree of efficiency. That the sortie was executed exactly as planned and success achieved was largely attributable to Flight Lieutenant Blessing's fine leadership and great skill. This officer has taken part in 17 sorties, all of them in daylight, invariably displaying great determination and efficiency. On two occasions he has flown his badly damaged aircraft back to base."

At 2010 hours it was reported that the aircraft had crashed at Molesworth near Desborough at 2004 hours. A later Flying Accident report stated: “the aircraft took off at 1930 hours. At 2000 hours it was seen by the fourth witness apparently on track on the second leg of the exercise at a height of between 500/1000 feet. It was on fire. The aircraft turned to port sharply and crashed to the ground burning fiercely. The Court found: “the accident was caused by fire probably in the port engine which broke out for some unknown reason. In view of the fact that there was a hole in the wallet of the Pilot which was picked up in the debris, and which may have been caused by a bullet, it is not possible to rule out the theory that the aircraft may have been shot down, although the court considered that it was very remote that the aircraft was shot down.”
