NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

A Distinguished Flying medal has been awarded to Rear Gunner Sergeant Akeroyd, who according to an official account, was carrying out his duties in one of the formation of aircraft detailed to attack an enemy camp. Approaching the target, the formation was attacked by six enemy fighters and Akeroyd was wounded in the finger. Later, he was hit in the right arm and finally, in the stomach. In spite of injuries, he returned the fire at every opportunity. His wireless set was smashed and when the attackers had been driven off, he crawled forward and informed the piiot of his injuries and the extent of damage to the aircraft. He displayed great courage and fortitude throughout.

1942-09-01HalifaxIIW1248DY-OPocklington2329SaarbruckenOn the return flight the starboard outer engine failed due to a coolant leak. Although they had made it back to Yorkshire the remaining three engines failed before a landing could be made at Pocklington, and a forced landing was made in a field near Low Catton, to the S of Stamford Bridge at 05:30 and all on board survivedKilled on Active Service 7 Sep 1943Some of the crew walked to nearby East Farm owned by Mr Fred Lane. It was found that at the time of this incident the pilot had a habit of flying with the revs on the engines higher than normally recommended, this, combined with the flight engineer having set the petrol cocks incorrectly supplying fuel to the working engines had resulted in the available fuel in the tanks selected running out. The pilot very capable and this incident did not detract from his flying for which he was later awarded the DFC. After assessment of the a/c it was deemed beyond repair although the engines were taken away for re-use or stripping down for spares
