A student teacher for the Auckland Education Board. Enlisted at Levin as a pilot under training on the 09th February 1941. With No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School in March 1941. With No. 3 Flying Training School on the 03rd May 1941.
Pilot badge awarded on the 14th June 1941 and promoted to sergeant on the 26th July 1941. Embarked for Singapore on the 15th September 1941 arrived and joined 27 squadron flying the Blenheim on the 05th October 1941. Evacuated from Singapore in February 1942 and returned to New Zealand. Joined No. 2 Service Flying Training School as a staff pilot on the 23rd July 1942. Son of James Ballantine Steele (died 08th May 1987) and Mary Graham Steele (née Harre - died 01st June 1985), of Walton, Waikato, New Zealand. | ||||||
