At the end of 1943 the unit was relocated to Königsberg-Devau where the pilots attended training using the Junkers Ju 188 aircraft. On March 16, 1944 Bayer Staffel was assigned to the Athens-Kalimaki area and operated using the new aircraft they had learned. There they carried out various surveillance missions to Italy, Cyprus, Malta, Haifa, Alexandria, and the Suez Canal. In October 1944 they left Athens and moved to Szombathely in Hungary, then to Zagreb / Yugoslavia. For his prominent leadership in his unit, Bayer was awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on May 1, 1945 as Hauptmann and Staffelkapitän 3. (Fern) Staffel / Aufklärungsgruppe 33 / Luftflotte Reich. He died in 1974 in an accident.
