Data derived from many sources. Corrections/Additions welcomed via Helpdesk

* NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary

1944-01-01HalifaxVLK734AL-CLeeming Cross Country Navigation Exercise The crash occurred in day light when the a/c was on fire and attempting to land. The fire upset the pilot’s judgement and he failed to line up with the runway. Apart from missing the runway it is considered that the pilot showed considerable coolness and skill in saving his crew Survived Paradie Archive Database After take off the a/c was levelled off at 1,100ft (+6 boost, 2650 rpm). As the a/c circled the airfield the Flight Engineer noticed that the fuel pressure warning light was on. Almost immediately the port inner engine caught fire. The fuel cock to the engine was cut and the engine was feathered. When the engine had stopped the graviner fire extinguisher switch was operated but had very little effect on the fire. The propeller unfeathered and began to rotate and the fire increased. An attempt was made to reach the runway but the a/c was finally forced to land in a small field at 1630 hrs.
Report by Chief Technical Officer: The fire started from a petrol leak forward of the engine bulkhead. AIB investigators believe it to have been from an improperly lock hollow bolt in the banjo of the fuel pressure warning light coming loose or entirely cut. This bolt on the other engines were improperly locked (by the manufacturers) but still tight. The graviner system failed to control the fire because the petroflexpipe was burned through behind the pilot’s cock and the fuel to No1 tank was not shut off by the crew. The a/c was damaged as much by contact with a tree, two houses and shelter as by the fire. (Extract - Report On A Flying Accident Or Forced Landing Not Attributable To Enemy Action)
