Data derived from many sources. Corrections/Additions welcomed via Helpdesk

* NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary

1944-01-20HalifaxVLK656WL-CCroft1625BerlinJust as the a/c was releasing it's load of incendiaries at 19,000 feet it was hit twice by flak. The first hit towards the rear of the bomb bay and the second hit the fuselage near the wing root. The resulting damage was severe; the rudder control was sheared off, there was no oxygen supply or electrics from the rest position backwards, all the a/c aerials were missing and some of the electronics were destroyed. The a/c stayed in the air, the remainder of the bomb load was jettisoned although a number of remaining incendiaries caught fire in the bomb bay and filled the cockpit with smoke. This fire was later put out and the pilot made for home using only aileron controls to steer the a/c. The engines had not been damaged and there was no problem to the speed or height being lost. As the a/c reached the British coastline the intercom between the pilot and the wireless operator failed and soon after crossing the coast with the pilot beginning to loose control and out of fuel they abandoned the a/c somewhere in the Driffield area. There is a suggestion that the a/c continued on its own way for a period before crashing somewhere in the Flixton area to the west of Filey at 2359 hrs Some of the crew suffered heavy landings.
