Data derived from many sources. Corrections/Additions welcomed via Helpdesk

* NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary

This message was acknowledged and soon afterwards Fg Off Hanna gave his position 'downwind'. Almost immediately the caravan on the airfield reported an aircraft had crashed near the funnel. The aircraft was extensively damaged when found and six of the crew were dead, the only survivor dying shortly afterwards in Sick Quarters. 1942-10-12WellingtonIIZ8532PH-PWickenby1734GardeningAfter dropping two mines in the shipping channel in the mouth of the River Elbe and the crew made for home. The rear gunner suspected that their a/c was being followed by a German night fighter so the pilot flew as low as possible despite the dark night. Approaching the English coastline the crew were unsure of their location so attempted to gain height but as power was applied the port engine cut out. The pilot then ordered his crew to bale out. The rear gunner left the a/c but as they were flying at a height of 100ft his parachute failed to deploy properly and he was killed. The rest of the crew stayed in the a/c, which then crashed at around 0030 hrs near RAF Langtoft, between Driffield and Malton. The bomb aimer was thrown out during the crash and died of his injuries in the early hours of the following morning. 1944-01-20HalifaxVDK237NA-LMiddleton St George1932MagdeburgThe aircraft was damaged so badly by flak fire that the crew had to parachute. According to other sources, it is also possible that the damage to the machine caused by an attack by a German night fighter. With the autopilot turned on, the Halifax flew to the Alps, where it crashed on the rock face below the Kreuzkarspitze (2,591m). Over time, the debris slipped into the underlying KreuzkarseePoW No. 1208, Stalag Luft 6 Heydekrug Paradie Archive Database
