Data derived from many sources. Corrections/Additions welcomed via Helpdesk

* NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary

1945-01-03LiberatorKH214D13:35Attack Bridge 19 Burma-Siam Railway Hit by anti aircraft fire. Crashed into jungle KilledSingapore Memorial Column 455.
Paradie Archive DatabaseArchive Report KH214

Commenced operations on 13 December, bombing bridge 286 at Nakorn Chaisri, On 1 January 1945 they bombed the Bangkok railway bridge at Anakwin, and two days later attacked Bridge 19 on the Burma-Siam Railway. Killed in action during this operation when Liberator KH214 was shot down and crashed into dense jungle. All the crew were killed. The Squadron O.R.B. states: ‘Aircraft “D” at 1335 hours at 400 feet was seen to be hit by bursting LAA and crashed just NE of the bridge at Milestone 37.’

Eddie Gilbert, one of the pilots who was on the raid: “I saw Brodie crash you know. Three of us went after the same bridge and a locomotive stopped halfway across. It was in a valley, steep hills on both sides. We were five hundred feet, lower than the hills, Wallace the Fiji guy, went in first. Steve followed him and I was right behind. There were gun positions on the hills, both sides of the bridge. They hit Wallace, then they got Steve, hit his number 4. I could see the flames. Steve and Murray did a good job, everything they could, jettisoned the bombs, got the prop feathered, as fast as anyone could. They tried to climb but there wasn’t room. Hit the top of a hill just one big explosion”.’

Paradie Archive DatabaseThe a/c was intercepted on the way to the target by two Luftwaffe ME-110 night fighters coming at them head on. One nightfighter was dealt with by the nose gunner Flt Sgt Bailey and then Plt Off Brodrick, the rear gunner, also engaged the fighter as it came under his guns. It was noted that the cockpit of the enemy a/c was damaged and one engine was on fire as the fighter fell out of sight. During the attack, cannon fire from the ME110 damaged controls and put the rear turret out of action. The results of the gunfire also wounded the pilot Plt Off Hobson who still managed to jettison the bombs and fly the a/c. Flt Sgt Flesch was severely wounded. The a/c was badly damaged by the attack the use of dive manoeuvres helped to shake off the last fighter. This manoeuvre brought the a/c into range of what was initially light flak. The flak increased the further they strayed. With his controls becoming less responsive Plt Off Hobson was not able to stop the additional damage being inflicted by the flak. The Wellington was reported to have impacted at a high rate of speed into a marshy area near Wilhelmshaven Germany.
Details given later by Flt Sgt Bailey describes that X3477's nose section broke off on impact and the centre section of the Wellington spun around and skidded backwards. While the rear section was thrown a distance from the main sections.

Investigating officers from the RCAF visited the village of Steinberg 40 miles NW of Berlin. They were told by the villagers that a large British aircraft had crashed four to five hundred yards west of the villa and that the crew had been buried in a communal grave in the local cemetery. It was believed that the aircraft had been shot by night fighters. The grave was exhumed but unhappily Sgt. Taylor the Flight Engineer and the Bomb Aimer Fg.Off.
